英語学習書なのでファンなら誰もが知っている有名エピソードが載っているのだと思うけど、私には初耳だったこともちらほら。フィリピン事件とか。
ラダーシリーズは英語学習者向けと言えどもレベル４ともなれば私にはちょっと難しい、という印象だったんだけど、内容が超有名バンドの物語だからなのか、予想よりもスルスル読めた。ただし黙読では迷子になってしまうので音読で。
英語学習というよりもそのまんまビートルズの歴史について学んだ（知った）という感じで、彼らの人気や他のミュージシャンへの影響力、成し遂げた偉業がどれほどのものだったのか、ということとともに、やはり人間同士、付き合っているうちにすれ違いも起きるし、大衆の反応の軽薄さとか、人生が難しくなると精神世界の探究に傾倒することとか、生身の個人とスターとしてのギャップのこととか、後々しみじみと思い返しそうな収穫がいっぱいあった感じがしている。
メンバー間のすれ違いがあったにもかかわらず、最後に収録されたアルバムの制作中はそんなことを感じさせない雰囲気だったというエピソードがグッとくる。音楽の神様からの、彼らへの最後のギフトだったのかもしれない。
While they were making Abbey Road, the Beatles were able to forget about most of the differences of opinion and problems that they had in the past.
They were able to have fun during the recording, and sometimes they felt that it might be possible for the band to continue on into the future.
Ringo remembers that "It was magical. There were some really loving, caring moments between four people...An amazing closeness. Four guys who really loved each other."
When they finished the record, however, somehow everyone knew that it was time for the Beatles to break up. (from P.75-76)
